History of Model Boats

The history of model ships can be traced back to ancient Greece, Egypt, and Phoenicia and have provided archaeologists with valuable information on the history of seafaring technology. In ancient times sailing the sea was not only a source of enjoyment and travel but also a vital center of technology, trades and industry. The model ships created during these times were used as decorations in burial ceremonies, gifts, and as drinking vessels. These ship models are valuable today as they give scientists insight into the technology and size of ancient boats.

Model boats and model ships are available in many sizes and types which vary depending on what they will be used for and the interest of the hobbyist. Cast metal boats are the smallest of the model boats. Radio controlled ships and historical models are the largest of the model ships made. In addition to differing scale sizes these ships also are distinguished by being waterline models which sit flat and are visible at the waterline or full boats which have keels.

Model Ship Scales

Scales for model ships are all for above the waterline models which are used for recreational play. The scaling typically depends on the area of the play and the number of pieces involved. For military models the scale is typically 1:2400, sailing ships that are before the twentieth century are typically on a scale of 1:2000. There are many scales available and range from 1:600 to 1:6000.

Model Ship Building Materials

The most common types of materials used in model boats are wood, metal, plastic and paper. Wood and plastic kits are by far the most common and popular of those available due to cost and level of experience required. Wooden model ships are made by either carving a model from a solid block or by using a bread and butter technique were the wood is glued together in layers to create the ship. Since World War 2 plastic ships have become increasingly popular. Plastic model ships are made by using preformed plastic parts and gluing them together with rubber cement. These plastic kits are relatively inexpensive and can be constructed in one day with little experience. Metal model ships are usually cast from lead or other alloys. Paper preprinted kits are more popular in Europe than America and come in a variety of scales.

Model ships can be made from a variety of types and depending on the maker can be very detailed. In today's collector driven market you can find a model of just about any boat produced. You can find models of fishing boats, tug boats, war ships, sailing vessels, power boats, jet boats, etc. As a ship lover you can find a model for just about any type of vessel.

Radio Controlled Model Boat Kits

If you are interested in a model that allows you a little more room and excitement you can buy a radio controlled model. Radio controlled models offer you sizes from those that run in an aquarium to those that you can operate on the open water. Radio controlled models can be purchased already assembled and ready to run, almost ready to run or ready to assemble. You can get a radio controlled model boat in everything from sailing boats to power boats and they are made with a variety of materials from wood to plastic. Typically the engines run from 27 MHz to 49 MHz, the size you need depends on how much power you want your boat to have. If you are interested in racing you should look for a boat with a larger engine that is able to produce more power.

Model boats allow us to experience the joy of sailing without having to leave the dock. They are an alternative to a hobby that is typically too expensive for the average person to enjoy. Model ships allow us to dive into the world of sailing and imagine ourselves floating away while keeping our feet dry on the docks and can be a great way to engage our kids in the joy of the open water.
