The first time I drove my Losi Micro SCT I knew it had to have a power upgrade. For a while, the LiPo upgrade satisfied me, but even that grew old. I knew the only option left was to install a brushless system, and really the only option out there is the Losi system, so that's what I went with.

Ease of Installment - 5/10

It's a fact - working on micros is tough and sometimes frustrating. This isn't completely the brushless system's fault, but more that of Losi for designing the Micro SCT poorly for those of us who wish to perform maintenance on it. Admittedly the brushless system did have a few kinks during installation, however. First off, there is very little room to fit everything in the same space as before. With the stock system, the receiver and ESC were both one unit. With the new brushless system however, they are not, meaning that more space is needed to fit a full size receiver and ESC in the same space. Trust me that this is not an easy problem to overcome. To allow everything to fit, I had to put the ESC in the battery tray (the Zippy LiPos I am running are too large to fit in there anyway so I run them secured on the inside of the body). The new three-wire servo was placed in the correct spot, and finally the 2.4ghz FlySky receiver jammed underneath the body with the battery. This brings up another point.

To be able to actually operate the new system, you will need an aftermarket receiver/transmitter and a three-wire servo. I find this kind of ridiculous because this can cost you an extra $50 or more depending on which options you chose. For a radio system, I used my FlySky 2.4ghz three channel system which has all of my rc cars on it. For a servo, I went with a cheap, Chinese made micro servo made for a plane. It only cost me $3.50 off eBay, so I was happy. I definitely was not going to spend $20 for the three-wire servo that Losi has marketed specifically for this application. To sum up the installment process, it was frustrating but rewarding at the end when I had a working vehicle.

Acceleration - 8/10

Sometimes acceleration is more important than anything. It's what gives you those crazy wheelies and the power to do donuts and burnouts! I was pleased to see that my Losi brushless system provided plenty of torque after the drivetrain was broken in. For the first few runs after installing the new system, it cogged a lot, and didn't seem to have very much torque at all (torque is what gives it acceleration). To be honest, I was quite disappointed in the new brushless system I had just invested over $60 in. Thankfully, after allowing the drivetrain to loosen it's self up (the spur/pinion mesh will loosen and the differentials will become smoother, yielding a more efficiently operating system), the system stopped cogging near as much and became much more enjoyable to drive. Even after the break in though, the motor still does cog somewhat. I think this may be due to the ESC not providing full power to the motor at the yank of the trigger, which is supposed to protect the drivetrain against damage. But I found this to be more of a nuisance than a help.

Speed - 10/10

I picked the 8750kv combo because I knew that even it would have more than enough speed. And you know what? It did! I can't imagine what kind of speeds you could achieve with the 10250kv combo because I was getting around an estimated 20mph with this system on 2s. Some guys even run 3s (although I don't think that you are supposed to run more than 2s, so I wouldn't recommend it). I can't even fathom how much speed 3s would bring. To be short about it, this brushless system probably increased the speed three-fold, making it a whole lot more fun. The only disadvantage is that this means it rolls over a lot more and needs a larger space to run in. For this kind of power, though, I can definitely live with these drawbacks!

At the end of these test sessions, I knew that I was going to be using my Micro SCT a lot more than I had been. To sum up the overall performance of this system, I would simply use the word "killer". While it's a pain in the you-know-what, the performance gained was more than worth it, which is why this Losi micro brushless combo scored a 7.6/10. I am more than happy with this system and will without a doubt be keeping it.
